A new study has revealed that cardio and strength training "significantly sharpens" the mind in addition to the positive impact it has on the body.

Professor Brendon Stubbs, who worked on the research for sports brand Asics, explained that exercise stimulates cell growth in the brain and rapidly increases blood flow to parts of it.

Those who took part in the study saw their mental abilities boosted by an average of 10 per cent and their problem-solving skills enhanced by nine per cent.

Additionally, their short-term memory surged by 12 per cent and alertness increased by 10 per cent.

Andrew Kastor, who led the research, said: "These results are astonishing and speak to the power of exercise.

"No matter your fitness levels, the mental benefits of exercise are accessible to all."
