A British man has become the first reported case of someone breaking their penis vertically.
The unnamed individual injured himself while having sex with doctors stating that his penis simply "buckled".
The break caused the penis to become "grossly swollen" and bruised, even though the man in question did not report hearing the usual "popping" sound associated with the injury.
The British Medical Journal (BMJ) explains that a broken penis occurs when the protective layer around the erectile tissue, which pumps blood to the penis, is damaged to "unusual bending".
It was revealed in the journal that the man was able to resume sexual activity shortly after sustaining the injury.
It said: "This patient was able to resume sexual activity within six months of the injury, achieving erections of the same quality to those prior to the injury, denying any penile curvature or significant palpable scarring."
