Beach hires out special wheelchairs for disabled

''with equity and dignity''

A beach in Trinidad and Tobago is hiring out special wheelchairs to enable people with disabilities to go swimming.

Four specially-designed wheelchairs are available to use at Maracas Beach as part of the nation's new Amphibious Wheelchair Service for those with mobility issues.

Visitors are taken out to sea in wheelchairs by two lifeguards, who show them how to use the equipment.

Yolande V. Selman, acting Chief Executive of the Tourism Development Company, admitted the initiative was important to allow those with disabilities to function ''with equity and dignity''.
