Sierra Leone drivers made to play board game first

New drivers in Sierra Leone have to play a board game before being allowed to hit the road.

''They [novice drivers] will have to pay for it. Then they will play it for two or three months, or maybe just one if they're smart enough, then they will come for their test.''

The motorists must purchase the Highway Code game, during which they are tasked with answering questions on road safety, and then play it for two or three months before they are allowed to drive in the country.

Sarah Bendu, Executive Director of Sierra Leone's Road Transport Authority, said: ''They [novice drivers] will have to pay for it. Then they will play it for two or three months, or maybe just one if they're smart enough, then they will come for their test.''

In the game, players control classic car figures and aim to negotiate a series of obstacles on the board.

The game costs around US$14 and there are plans in place to create an online version.
