Hunter gets lost in forest, lives on snakes

A deer hunter who got lost in a forest after hitting his head and knocking himself out managed to survive for 19 days on snakes, lizards and algae.

Gene Penaflor, 72, couldn't get out of the Mendocino National Forest in California as he felt too weak to move far after he fell over and knocked himself out on a stone.

Despite having his gun with him, he couldn't muster the energy to use the weapon so he relied on hunting smaller reptiles and algae to stay alive.

He slept underneath a fallen tree to keep himself warm on freezing nights, during which it snowed on a few occasions, and he was eventually discovered by a group of hunters.
