A fifth of Britons can't afford holidays

Over a fifth of Britons can't afford a holiday this year.

A fifth of Britons can't afford to go on holiday this year according to a survey by the Travel Channel UK.

A survey of 2,000 people commissioned by the Travel Channel UK and Vision Critical has revealed that, on average, 21 percent of people living in Britain will not be able to go on holiday this year.

Travel Channel presenter, Jenny Powell said of the results: ''In my job, I've been lucky enough to visit some amazing and luxurious locations around the world, however through meeting holidaymakers and going away with friends and family, it's more and more clear that people are struggling to afford to get away and enjoy a great break.''

The poll found that an average of only 26 percent could comfortably afford a holiday abroad this year whilst 22 percent of women and 31 percent of men in the survey said they couldn't afford to go away.

Despite these findings, today (20.01.14) is expected to be the busiest day for booking summer holidays and 20 percent of 18-34-year-olds are expected to purchase getaways with money they've saved up over the past year.
