A £24,000 car was driven down a busy dual carriageway with the bonnet up.

''Why would anyone think driving along a public highway with your bonnet up was a good idea?''

Onlookers shrieked in shock as they noticed the vehicle being driven down the 50mph road with its bonnet up and a battery charger attached to the engine in Hampshire, southern England.

Journalist Jon Cuthill, who overtook the motor in his car, told the BBC: ''I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

''Why would anyone think driving along a public highway with your bonnet up was a good idea?''

A Mercedes dealership is now carrying out an investigation to identify the driver after confirming the vehicle is currently for sale at £24,000.
