Believing in ghosts can make a person happier.
Scientists believe that individuals who are convinced that poltergeists are real are less likely to be distressed by the prospect of death.
Chris French, head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at Goldsmiths, University of London, claims it can be "beneficial" to believe in spirits as it can help people process the passing of a family member.
French told the Instant Genius podcast: "I acknowledge that there are some benefits from holding some paranormal beliefs. We all fear our own mortality and maybe even more so the death of our loved ones.
"So any kind of evidence, even if on the surface it might seem negative, scary ghosts, any kind of evidence of the possibility of life after death, we will tend to be drawn to it.
"The point is, people want to believe."
