The flying mammals chose the building in Lviv as their lovenest and settled down in cupboards, drawers and sacks of vegetables.

Bat expert Dr. Andriy-Taras Bashta suggested that the nocturnal animals were using the property to hibernate during the winter season.

He said: ''They were engaged in what the bats do at this time - mating.''

Dr. Bashta revealed that none of the animals had been killed when they were discovered and were instead removed and released into their natural habitat.

He said: ''We counted them as they were removed - about 1,700 animals in all. All of them were alive. They are often together like this.

''The bats were everywhere, everywhere. I wish you could have seen the faces of the apartment owners when we began to carry them away.''

He also revealed that the bats had been living in the apartment for around a week.

Dr. Bashta said: ''The first bats flew into this balcony about a week ago. The owners were afraid to go out to the balcony and hoped the bats would fly away.''
