Researchers found that people got to sleep faster and slept for longer if they treated themselves to the two food items before heading off to bed.

Eating bananas cut the time it took for those having trouble sleeping to drift off from an average of two hours to 36 minutes instead.

Meanwhile, a milky drink reduced the amount of time that participants stayed awake from more than two hours to just over one.

Experts say that bananas and milk are good for shuteye as they are sources of tryptophan - a chemical that is essential for numerous bodily functions including sleep.

Scientists at the University of Health Sciences in Turkey said: "Foods high in tryptophan - such as bananas and milk - may improve sleep disorders when consumed at bedtime.

"Both of them are known to have sleep-inducing effects."
