A study has found that parents dealing with a stressful household often turned to social media for relaxation but their scrolling made them more likely to nag and shout at their kids.

Researchers questioned more than 500 adults on their use of digital media and parenting practices and found that negative parenting behaviour increases when "technology interrupted family interactions".

Lead author Jasmine Zhang, from the University of Waterloo in Canada, told the journal Computers in Human Behaviour: "All members of the family matter when we try to understand families in a society saturated with technology.

"It's not just children who are often on devices. Parents use digital media for many reasons, and these behaviours can impact their children."
