An Austin Powers impersonator is bidding to become the mayor of Auckland
Gary Brown is the world's first authorised impersonator of Mike Myers' spoof spy and plans to "go in to bat for all Aucklanders".
Brown, who already serves as a politician in the city, has performed as Austin Powers for more than 20 years and some members of the New Zealand media have urged him to adopt the character in his campaign.
An open letter published in The Spinoff read: "Gary Brown wants to get out into communities and learn from people, rather than assume what needs to be done.
"If there's one thing you could learn from this particular community, it is that you should strongly consider running your campaign as Austin Powers."
