Artificial Intelligence networks may already be slightly conscious, says AI expert

The co-founder of OpenAI, Ilya Sutskever wrote on Twitter: "It may be that today's largest neural networks are slightly conscious."

No specifics were given by Ilya but some believe he was referring to the mega-scale neural networks, which is the language processing system his company built for translation, adding in missing words and answering questions.

However, other AI professionals, such as AI researcher Toby Walsh rubbished the claims.

He said: "Every time such speculative comments get an airing, it takes months of effort to get the conversation back to more realistic opportunities and threats posed by AI."

Thomas D Dietterich, an expert in AI at the Oregon State University, suggest that Ilya was just “trolling”.
