Traces of an ancient ocean have been found on Mars.
Scientists who have discovered evidence of the ocean and other waterways claim that the findings raise hopes that there could be life on the red planet.
The research provided a strong indication that Mars previously experienced sea levels consistent with a warm and wet climate, rather than the frozen landscape that now exists.
Benjamin Cardenas, of Penn State University, said: "What immediately comes to mind as one of the most significant points here is that the existence of an ocean of this size means a higher potential for life.
"It also tells us about the ancient climate and its evolution."
Cardenas added that the findings show that "there had to have been a period when it was warm enough" on Mars to support the existence of water.
