To be honest, we expect to see celebrities at the Cannes Film Festival on red carpets, and at posh parties, and looking glam, so we were quite shocked when we spotted Ewan McGregor doing this. Here he is playing a game of bowls. Yes, he still looks smart is his stripy blue jacket, but he is playing one of the most unsexy sports around... bowls! He looks very much into the game and chucking the silver balls. He wasn’t the only one taking part in the tournament – there was also Nanni Moretti – the Italian director - and Jean Paul Gautier too. All three of the men are actually on the jury to decide which film will win the big prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Nanni Moretti has been talking and saying that he would prefer it of what went on in Cannes, stayed in Cannes. He said: “There were two remaining taboos in the world — the silence after the awards and the conclave. Now it’s just the conclave.” The big prize at Cannes is called the Palme d’or and director Moretti won it in 2006 for his film The Son’s Room. This year, he is head of the panel who will decide the winner. There are 9 people in total, including Dianne Kruger, Alexander Payne, Jean Paul Gaultier and Ewan McGregor. The panel have to watch all 22 films over the 11 day festival – so we’re actually surprised that they have time to play bowls. Ewan McGregor confessed at the start of the festival that he only read the list of films as he arrived at his hotel and had done no preparation. He also told a group of reporters: “As an actor ... when we come to festivals we show our films, and we get to see our film, and then we sit in a dark room for three days with your good selves, and then we go home. What a privilege it will be to sit in the dark for 12 days and have all these great stories sweep over us.”
