Bo Bruce doing what she does best
When I found out that Bo Bruce had made it into the final four of Orange Unsigned with Sony Ericsson I almost threw my TV out of the window; she had bad -mouthed one of the judges and stolen a final place from those incredible boys in Scarlet Harlots. I knew this interview was going to be trouble.
But from the moment I picked up the phone I was in love with her - in a non-lesbian way - and she well and truly charmed the bloody pants off me, again, in a non-lesbian way. Her passion for singing and her love for the Scarlet Harlots is undeniable; and this is a women who really has the voice of an angel⦠well sort of a rock and roll angel, if they have them in HMV.
Hey Bo, how does it feel knowing youâve made it to the final four?
Iâm feeling pretty nervous! [FF: Why?] Because itâs such a mad place to be, I had no idea Iâd ever get this far.
Really! What made you enter the competition in the first place then?
Possibly my love for Alex James.
Oh my god, we are totally with you on thatâ¦. I put him on my Christmas wish list this year! But aside from a wedding to Mr James, do you think you have what it takes to win the ultimate prize?
Do you know what, I really really hope so! Itâs all I want and itâs become a bit of an obsession really, I want it that much! Over the past few months I have been a really shit girlfriend and friend really because I go to sleep thinking about it, I wake up thinking about it, I talk about it all day! So I hope so.
Well you do have an incredible voice! But who do you think is your biggest rival?
I guess as a singer / songwriter I would have to say Tommy Reilly because heâs an amazing singer and he has a lot of love going on and a lot of fans already, so voting-wise I think heâs going to do pretty well.
Who would you like to see come back on the wildcard show?
I am praying that Scarlet Harlots come back, they are such lovely guys and they are so good. They are the ultimate rock stars.
When they were kicked off the show and you stayed there was a bit of an uproar from avid Harlots supporters as well as judge Lauren Laverne; how did that make you feel.
Ah, Lauren was really cross and sad to see them go which was fair enough. I think everyone has their favourites and they were hers so she was understandably gutted; in fact we all were. It was strange because I was standing on the stage with them knowing that one of them was going to go home and even when they said âWeâre going to keep Boâ my heart sunk because they are so good and they have become really good mates of mine so it took me quite a few days to be happy again.
I think if they come back they could win, I donât think they have peaked yet.
How do you cope with the fact that Lauren Laverne keeps taking digs at you?
The thing about Lauren and I is that we are both extremely passionate musicians and for me there is a difference between responding and reacting and I so passionately wanted to get through and for her to want me and it ended up getting pretty heated but I really hope we can draw a line under it to be honest.
It would be nice to go back and for it to just be something that happened last year.
So what do you have in store for us in the semi-final on the 18th?
Well I have written a new tune called Kiss In The Dark which Iâm really excited about and have just put it up on my MySpace. Itâs a tune for the girls to get jumping to as itâs a bit poppy!
Yay! Because I know the judges have been on your back to do something more upbeat, so now you can show them what youâre made of!
Yes, I know, I have taken on board what they want and now I have something to give them! Iâm really proud of it too.
So other than yourself, who would you like to win the competition?
If I donât get to win then I would love Scarlet Harlots to win.
Ooh, weâre backing Hip Parade.
Yeah, they are good too, but I love the Harlots.
I see what you mean, I spoke to Sam yesterday and he made me want to marry him a little bit.
Haha! Thatâs perfect! He must be brilliant at interviews. They are such sweet guys you know, when I first saw them I thought âWow! They are so coolâ but then I found out they are so incredibly sweet too!
Aww, I want to bring them home with me! Haha, but to anyone who hasnât been watching the show, how would you sum yourself up in five words?
Iâm so bad at these. Help me, [FF; Iâm bad at these questions?] Woo! There you go! Love it.
Thatâs a very good answer! So where would you like to see yourself in 12 months?
I would like to be on tour with Coldplay with an album produced by Massive Attack.
When writing songs where do you take inspiration from?
Well in the past they have been stories about stuff thatâs been going on in my life. Itâs always something I feel at that moment; which is maybe why a lot of my songs are quite dark, because thatâs what was happening with me. But the more life gets upbeat, the more the music getâs upbeat.
Well at least we know youâre singing from the heart.
There was a moment when I realised that all my songs were quite dark, but then again, I had to let it all out because I just canât block it; when there is something wanting to come out there is no way around it!
Fair enough; so despite being a solo lady, if you have the chance to join any band in the history of music, which would it be?
Wow, there are so many. I think Iâd have to be a token Rolling Stone. Also I think Iâd have to be a chick in Girls Aloud too, I reckon Iâd struggle with their dance routine and the fact that they have the most unbelievable bodies too; maybe I can just sing along and hang out and have a beer?
No more cheese from Alex Jamesâ farm for you if you join Girls Aloud! Although Iâd sacrifice Girls Aloud for Alex! But apart from Alex, who is the greatest musician of all time?
It would have to be Bob Dylan or Jeff Buckley.
Good choice. Now tell me, what did you always want as a child but never got?
One of those little plastic stoves with a fake toaster and a frying pan and a fried egg⦠I always wanted one and never got one; I was thinking about food from my nursery years!
Oh I loved them, I never had one either!
I also wanted one of those little bubble cars that you got in and pushed along with your feet; all my mates had one and I never got one!
Get to Toys âRâ Us now and get yourself one! Although I was always worried Iâd get momentum going and my feet would get stuck underneath and start dragging between the pavement and the car and Iâd scrape all my skin off.
Oh dear! Well when I used to go to Toys âRâ Us my dad would say everything was so expensive and Iâd end up leaving with like a clown hat and a whistle!
I can level with your there Bo, sounds just like my mum! Letâs leave the childhood memories behind then and can you describe to me your dream house?
My dream house would be in the middle of the desert. Iâve always wanted a house in the desert. It would have loads of air conditioning and a huge oasis style pool. Thatâs what I want.
That would be amazing! So finally; if you were at a friends house having dinner and you found a dead cockroach in your salad, what would you do?
[In a coy voice] Eat it, come on, we know that! If it was covered in Caesar dressing I could bring myself to eat it!
Oh no, weâre not on Iâm A Celebrity⦠now! Okay, so we also ask everyone we interview to come up with a question for the next person, and Toby Sebastian wants to know, do you like to paint?
I love painting actually. My mumâs an artist, Iâm not very good but I still do it!
Paint FemaleFirst a picture for our wall! Weâd love it. So can you think of a question for The Script please?
Ask them if they will marry me!
Okay dokie, I had better get an invite though! Good luck with the rest of the competition anyway!
Thank you! Bye!
Bye!
So with Bo Bruce finishing our run of Orange Unsigned Act with Sony Ericsson interviews, I am left completely baffled by who I want to win: The cheeky Scottish Hip Parade, who have to be my favourite musicians, the immense Tommy Reilly whose songs leave me with goosebumps, schoolboy Toby Sebastian, who would perhaps benefit from this the most, or Bo Bruce, the only girl remaining, and possibly the only other person on the planet who loves Alex James as much as me.
Whatever happens, Bo Bruce has won me over 100% and even if she endâs up only playing in a local pub, I pray to God that itâs my local.
