Oasis

Oasis

Can you believe it is nearly 2010 already? It hardly seems five minutes ago we were toasting to 2009 with the sounds of Lady Gaga's 'Just Dance' and Beyonce's 'Single Ladies'...

2009 was yet another year for rekindling long-lost loving music pals who had fallen out and had now decided to give the music biz another chance (bar Robbie and his stubbornness to avoid rejoining Take That... WHY ROBBIE, WHY?) Yes, 2009 was a pretty good year for those bands who managed to put their differences aside and make even more money.

It seems that this year the music industry seems to be a much more harmonious business than usual, we at FemaleFirst love a good split, but the world seems to be full of music love. Darnit!

If you're in a band it's certainly much cooler these days to be 'on hiatus.' Much like Ross and Rachel were 'on a break' right? What is the deal with being on Hiatus anyway? Is this just a softer way of telling us that they've split up? To disappear without a trace and never resurface to make music again?

Here is the low down on the bands who split and those bands that are just enjoying a nice music holiday.

The three biggest break-ups of the year:

OASIS

Liam Gallagher

August

The gruesome twosome (sorry) are always bickering, falling out, missing shows and slagging each other off to the press. But never did we think we'd see the day Oasis would officially split. They're brothers after all, they can't split can they...? What would their mother say?

In August of this year Oasis were set to play both V Festival events, but after playing Weston Park on the Saturday night they announced shortly after that they were pulling out of the Sunday gig at Chelmsford, claiming Liam had been struck down with viral Laryngitis. However, this non-appearance was the first clue of a rumoured split.

Oasis vowed to play the Rock En Scene festival in Paris towards the end of the month but cancelled, it was confirmed that Noel had walked out of the band after what had been described as the biggest bust up the boys had ever had.

The band have no hopes of getting back together, after it was claimed one of the brothers would never play another gig with the other unless they were offered a ridiculous some of money.Typical.

THE VERVE

The Verve

August

This year saw the 2007 reunion of the Verve come to an end causing the Verve to split for a third time... sigh. Guitarist Nick McCabe stated that the band were on an 'indefinate holiday,' shortly before he and bassist Simon Jones stopped speaking to frontman Richard Aschroft altogether.

McCabe and Jones have now formed a new band called 'The Black Ships' with Goldfrapp's Davide Rossi and drummer Mig Schillace.

THE RAKES

The Rakes

October

London four-piece the rakes announced a split on October 22nd saying that their hearts just weren't in it anymore. The band had scheduled a 2009 tour that was supposed to kick off just four days after the announcement, needless to say, the tour was cancelled.

Aside from the splits, 2009 saw a mighty rise in the number of bands claiming to be on 'hiatus,' 'on a break,' 'on a semi-perminant separation' - whatever you want to call it...

Bloc Party

Bloc Party

The future of Bloc Party was called into question in October this year after members of the band suggested they needed a 'lengthy' break. Drummer Matt Tong said the band's future is uncertain and was unsure whether he'd return to music at all. Frontman Kele Okereke was reportedly working on a solo album shortly after the split, causing some to question whether the Bloc Party hiatus is permanent.

Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters have been on hiatus since 2008 as members work on side projects. Nate Mendal has this year been on the road with Sunny Day Real Estate and Dave Grohl has been busy supporting his new project Them Crooked Vutlures.Dave Grohl stated that not only did the band need a break, but the audience needed a break from the band, "I think the world doesn't need a new Foo Fighters record right now."

Girls Aloud

Girls Aloud

In July Girls Aloud's Sarah Harding announced that she was leaving the band for a year to persue an acting career. In November it was then reported that she insisted that she was unsure how much longer the band could stay together. 2009 has seen all members of the band go their seperate ways, Cheryl Cole has recieved success with a new-found solo career and won over the nation in her second year on the X Factor. Nadine Coyle has also been working on solo material (we are very much looking forward to her first solo release in March 2010!) Kimberly Walsh has a modelling contract with clothing chain New Look and Nicola Roberts is much indulged with her Dainty Doll make-up range. However, if you are panicking about the chance Girls Aloud may never rekindle, the band have stated that they wish to rejoin and produce another album in Autumn 2010. Phew!

Fall Out Boy

Fall Out Boy

This year saw the release of Fall Out Boy's Greatist Hits album, surely a greatest hits number signals the end of making music (are we the only ones who think a greatest hits compilation should come at the END of someone's career?) Anyway, on August 22nd Fall Out Boy confirmed that they were indeed, on hiatus until 2011.

Pussycat Dolls

Pussycat Dolls

September of 2009 saw stories circulating of an impending break-up of the Pussycat Dolls. However, the band is not breaking up, the five girls are joining the hiatus bandwagon and going on a 'much needed break.' Melody Thornton said, "it's like when you're with your sisters for 24 hours a day and you need to take your own shower."

System of a Down

System of a Down

The rock band have been on an extremely long hiatus since 2006, constantly dismissing rumours that they are splitting with guitarist Malakian saying,"we will always be System of a Down!" The band are still insisting that they are not splitting up premanently... three years after declaring themselves on hiatus.

¡Forward, Russia!

"We have decided to take a break from doing ¡Forward, Russia!" The Leeds band agreed in August.

We're bored of all these bands taking breaks now. Can we go on hiatus?

Oh and happy 2010! Here's to a year of bust-ups, fall-outs and bitter arguments.

Female First - Jennifer Dixon

Can you believe it is nearly 2010 already? It hardly seems five minutes ago we were toasting to 2009 with the sounds of Lady Gaga's 'Just Dance' and Beyonce's 'Single Ladies'...
