The graphic comic book series written and illustrated by David Petersen will be turned into a live-action movie produced by 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' director Matt Reeves, but he will not helm the project.

'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' screenwriter Gary Whitta is in line to pen the script for the CGI motion picture, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Ross Richie and Stephen Christy will co-produce the project alongside Reeves.

The live-action film is to be shot in a similar way to 2014 sci-fi movie 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' and this year's 'The Jungle Book'.

Bi-monthly comic book series 'Mouse Guard' tells the story of a group of mice who live in a medieval era with no humans.

The Mouse Guard are a brotherhood of the rodents who swore an oath to serve civilian mice when they are in danger.

Almost one million copies have been printed of the series, and another installment, 'Mouse Guard: The Weasel Wars', is expected to be released next year.

'Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard' won the coveted Eisner Award in 2011 for best anthology.
