James Gunn has revealed that there are currently no 'real plans' for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

While the director admits that they are not yet looking that far ahead, he is confident that there will be a third film in the popular franchise.

In answer to a fan's question on Twitter, the director did talk about the status of a third Guardians film. However, he did not confirm that he would return should a third film go ahead.

Of course, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is set to hit the big screen next year and will come three years after the success of the first.

The movie does see Gunn on both writing and directing duties and it is already one of the most highly anticipated films of 2017.

The movie sees Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, and Dave Bautista return to the roles of Peter Quill, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Drax.

It has already been announced that Sylvester Stallone, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kurt Russell are the big new additions to the cast list.

While Stallone's role is being kept under wraps, Debicki will take on the role of Ayesha and Russell is set to be introduced as Peter's Quill's father, Ego.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will be the first of three Marvel films to be release next year - followed by Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok as they continue to build towards the Avengers double-bill.

And some of the Guardians characters are expected to make an appearance in those two Avengers films in 2018 and 2019. The cast list has not yet been announced, so we are going to have to wait and see.

Guardians of the Galaxy grossed over $773 million at the global box office back in 2014 and I expect the sequel to be an even bigger hit.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is released 28th April 2017.
