Bill Skarsgård landed the role of Pennywise in the remake of It because he delivered a 'different spin' on the character, says producer Dan Lin.

Filming is well underway on the new remake of the horror film It, which sees Andrés Muschietti in the director's chair and Skarsgård take over the iconic role of Pennywise.

We have already been treated to the first image of Skarsgård as the clown that terrified a generation - it already looks set to be one of the horror movies not to miss next year.

And Lin reveals that they were 'freaked out' by the character that Skarsgård created during auditions.

Speaking to Collider, the producer said: "His build is really interesting. he's really tall and lanky, and feels a little clown like in his movement. When he came in - we had a lot of different actors read, and when he came in he had a different spin on the character that got us really excited.

"You've had Heath Ledger doing almost a clown joker, you've seen obviously Tim Curry as a clown. We wanted someone who created a Pennywise character that would stand on its own and Bill came in and created this character that frankly freaked us out."

It is the third feature film of Muschietti's directing career and comes four years since the success of horror film Mama.

The movie is based on the novel by Stephen King and has been adapted for the big screen by Gary Dauberman and Chase Palmer.

Skarsgård is joined on the cast list by Finn Wolfhard, Javier Botet, Nicholas Hamilton, Jaeden Lieberher, and Owen Teague.

It is released 8th September 2017 in the U.S. but no UK release date has yet been announced.
