Drew Barrymore is set to miss out on directing the third Twilight film - Juan Antonio Bayona is the new favourite to take the helm of Eclipse.

Charlie's Angels star Barrymore this week announced she was in the running to helm the third movie in the vampire franchise, which is slated to hit cinemas next summer (10).

Chris Weitz is directing the first Twilight sequel New Moon this summer (09), set for release in November (09).

Catherine Hardwicke directed the first movie that was an adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's popular novels at the end of last year.

The moviemaker scored the biggest debut ever for a female director whenthe bloodsucking love story shot to number one in the U.S. box office chart with takings of $69.6 million (£49 million)

It's believed that Hardwicke was troubled by the late 2009 early 2010 scheduled release date set by Summit Entertainment and felt that she needed more time to work on the project.
