New Moon

New Moon

To be fair when Twilight was released last year everyone was expecting a hit but no one, the actors in particular, we ready for the mass hysteria that followed.

While a universal gross of just over $383 million is not spectacular, particularly when it's compared to The Dark Knight gross of over $1 billion; the movie was the biggest grossing movie of 2008, the stars were thrust into the limelight.

And none more so than male lead, and British actor, Robert Pattinson who has become the latest heart-throb to grace the walls of many a young girl.

But it seems that excitement surrounding the latest adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's novels New Moon has gone up a notch.

Despite not being released until Friday New Moon is already the biggest selling pre-release movie of all time and looks set to be one of the biggest movies of the year.

Pattinson will return to the role as vampire Edward Cullen while Kristen Stewart is also returning to the central character Bella Swan and there's a larger role for Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black.

Following Bella's ill-fated 18th birthday party, Edward Cullen and his family abandon the town of Forks, Washington, in an effort to protect her from the dangers inherent in their world.

As the heartbroken Bella sleepwalks through her senior year of high school, numb and alone, she discovers Edwards image comes to her whenever she puts herself in jeopardy. Her desire to be with him at any cost leads her to take greater and greater risks.

With the help of her childhood friend Jacob Black, Bella refurbishes an old motorbike to carry her on her adventures. Bella's frozen heart is gradually thawed by her budding relationship with Jacob, a member of the mysterious Quileute tribe, who has a supernatural secret of his own.

When a chance encounter brings Bella face to face with a former nemesis, only the intervention of a pack of supernaturally large wolves saves her from a grisly fate, and the encounter makes it frighteningly clear that Bella is still in grave danger.

The books have sold over 14 million copies worldwide and have been named the 'next best series since Harry Potter'. The best-selling book and film adaptation of the novel are both from the mind of author, Stephenie Meyer, who says the idea for the story came to her in a dream.

And the excitement surrounding these movies looks set to continue as Eclipse, the third book in the series, has already wrapped and will be in cinemas next summer, Breaking Dawn is also on the horizon.

There's no denying that New Moon will top the box office over the world next week but just how close is it going to get to harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince's $929 gross, the biggest grossing film of 2009 so far?

New Moon is released 20th November.
