Gollum

Gollum

A bitter twisted creature doesn’t usually make it to iconic status, especially one that talks to itself and calls a ring ‘the precious’. Gollum is an exception though.

Frodo and Sam’s guide through the second Lord Of The Rings film, Gollum, instantly became a hit with the fans.

Although instantly recognisable, it wasn’t his gangly, beaten look that made him known to everyone though.

Based on sounds made by his cat, Andy Serkis’ voice was what made the character. Hissing and wheezing his way trough the film, he became the fodder of more impressionists worldwide over night.

Gollum was a technical triumph as well. Using state of the art motion capture techniques,  the special effects team behind Lord of The Rings were able to map every movement of Serkis so well, even his facial expressions are exactly the same as his CGI counterpart on screen.

Without Gollum, we wouldn’t even be nearing what is currently possible with computer technology, let alone paving a new brave path into the CGI world that we are.
