The character - who is also known as King Afonso I - is to make his debut in the hotly-anticipated Sid Meier game, which is to be released for Windows PC on October 21.

Nzinga is known for converting to Christianity and spreading faith across his empire but he won't be able to build any holy sites in the new game.

He has spent a lot of time trying to spread religion across his empire to try to modernise it after becoming allies with Portugal.

Nzinga's good terms with Portugal came about after he defeated his half-brother Mpanzu a Nzinga's forces in 1506.

Saint James the Great had a hand in the victory, which is said to have led to Christianity becoming Nzinga's faith.

Portuguese missionaries were welcomed into the Kingdom of Kongo and helped to modernise the empire with new schools and new ideas for architecture.

The turn-based strategy game see players go to battle with AI computer opponents.

It comes after 'Civilization V' was released for Windows in September 2010.

The original 'Civilization' game, also designed by Sid, dropped in September 1991.
