The Verge reports that the app is to be produced by the sci-fi thriller movie's director, Sir Ridley Scott, who is also working on the 'Prometheus' sequel, which is set to be released in May.

The VR experience is said to be product of Scott's production company RSA Films, Twentieth Century Fox's VR strand, Fox Innovation Lab and MPC VR.

Fox have teased that the experience is "dread-inducing journey into the depths of the 'Alien' universe.

They are yet to reveal which devices will be able to play the app when it is released.

It's the second attempt by the 'Alien' franchise to have the movie adapted into a gaming experience.

'Alien: Isolation' got as far as landing a demo of a VR game in 2014 by Creative Assembly, but it never materialised.

Scott's foray into VR apps comes after he openly admitted he does have concerns about the future of the film industry.

He said: "I want to keep doing cinema and I hope it doesn't affect those of us who still keep making smart films. I'm hoping it doesn't affect me."
