The new plate will hopefully ease the obesity epidemic

In the fight against obesity, doctors have a new device - a talking plate that warns you for eating too fast.

Experts believe eating slowly helps us to eat less - so overweight families could be given nagging plates to see if they can change their habits.

The Mandometer monitors the amount of food leaving the plate adn tells users who gobble: "Please eat more slowly."

Per Soderson, who helped devise the £1,500 plate, says: "Telling an obese person to diet will not work because dieting slows down the metabolism in preparation for starvationg.

"More important is the speed you eat and to recognise when you're full."

Around 600 families with at least one obese parent and child, aged from just five, will be target in the project by Bristol University in conjunction with GPs and nurses.
