The winter season is well and truly here, depressing we know and so what quickly follows is the dreaded flu season.
Some people are more susceptible than others, and recent research has indicated that women are more likely to get a cold than a man, so the new understanding that not only does the gut play a central role in your immune system but there are positive measures we can take to support it.
Very few of us are aware that nearly 60 per cent of our immune health is linked to our gut. The delicate balance of bacteria in our gut can be easily upset, which can result in the chances of other infections being easily caught.
There are lots of reasons why this imbalance may occur:
Feeling 'run down' or stressed
Recovering from illness
Taking a course of antibiotics
About to take the flu vaccination
Being 55+ of age
When it comes to supporting the immune system many people turn to traditional measures such as taking vitamin C and Echinacea at this time of year, often with limited success.
In this video, Dr Hilary Jones talks about the important role the gut has in the immune system and the valuable role second generation prebiotics can play.
