The British actor - who was most well known for his role as Alf Garnett in the long-running BBC sitcom 'Till Death Us Do Part' - passed away this morning (14.11.15), his family have confirmed.

Revealing the news on Twitter, his great nephew Jerry Barnett wrote: "Just got the news my great uncle Warren Mitchell (aka Alf Garnett) died last night. The last of his generation, wonderful and funny man RIP."

The news of his passing has also been confirmed in a statement from his family in which they insisted he was "cracking jokes" right up until the end despite his declining health.

A spokeswoman said: "Sadly we can confirm Warren Mitchell died in the early hours of Saturday 14th November surrounded by his family.

"He has been in poor health for some time but was cracking jokes to the last."

Warren - who is survived by his wife of 64 years Constance M. Wake and their three children - regularly appeared on stage alongside his role as the hilarious dockyard worker, for which he won a BAFTA award.

His roles in a stage version of 'Death of a Salesman' scored him two Olivier Awards in 1979.
