Sue Perkins has opened up about the moment she discovered that The Great British Bake Off would be moving from the BBC to Channel 4, admitting that she actually discovered the news while browsing social media.
She told Jay Rayner for The Guardian: “I learnt the news from a friend’s Facebook page. For a while it was really painful, but everybody has to do as they see best. It was seven years of my life and it had seen me through highs and lows.
“For three months, I’d go off to a stately home, play whist with Mary Berry, see all my friends and meet some really great bakers. Then, when it was all done, I’d go off on holiday.”
Perkins of course will no longer be hosting with Mel Giedroyc, and said of their decision: “Mel and I talked a lot last month, about what we’d have been doing at this point and that point.”
She does think that the replacements for the hosting pair, as well as Mary Berry are “capable of turning out a brilliant show” however. “The issue is chemistry,” she added.
The Great British Bake Off will make its Channel 4 debut later this year.
