Peter Capaldi and Jenna-Louise Coleman

'Doctor Who' star Peter Capaldi is hoping he'll be the maddest Doctor we've seen yet.

The 55-year-old actor took over the lead role at the end of the show's Christmas special last month and is adamant he will create a different chemistry with his co-star Jenna-Louise Colman - who plays his on-screen companion Clara Oswald - than previous stars Matt Smith and David Tennant.

Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine, he said: "We're going to give Clara a Doctor who is a much older, fiercer, madder, less reliable Doctor who leads her a merry dance."

Matt, 31- who took over from David, 42, in 2010 - quit his role as the titular Time Lord in December after playing him for four years, and Peter insists he will take the sci-fi show back in time to another era.

He explained: "The last two Doctors have been 'your boyfriend' Doctors. It was time for the show to flip around. The new version of the show is quite old now."

Meanwhile, Matt recently admitted he wishes he had stayed on the programme for at least another year because he thinks the connection between him and Jenna was strong.

He previously said: "Part of me genuinely feels that I sort of wish we have had another go at it, another year, because I feel we have really come on and sort of evolved."
