Martin Roberts has praised doctors for saving his life

The 58-year-old TV presenter recently had to undergo a life-saving operation when he had one-and-a-half litres of fluid drained from around his heart after experiencing chest pains, and he has now told how close to death he came.

He said: "I only found out afterwards but when I went into surgery, my heart was giving up, my kidneys and liver were operating at 30 per cent and my lungs were weakening.

"I should have been on the scrap heap, so little inside me was working as it should.

"The sensation of the chest restriction being lifted got better with every syringe of fluid they removed."

Martin managed to get some reassurance before the op when the surgeon admitted he hadn't killed anyone before while doing the procedure.

He added to The Sun newspaper: "I remember asking the surgeon if he’d ever killed anyone doing that procedure and he told me he had a clean sheet and didn’t intend to change that with me.

"They saved my life and I’ll never be able to repay them. From the porters and cleaners to the surgeons, each and every one of them deserves this nomination."

Last month, Martin was visibly emotional as he took to Instagram to share a video of himself on location as he resumed filming on 'Homes Under the Hammer' following his life-saving op.

The star - who has fronted the BBC renovation and auction show since the first series in 2003 - said: "So I've got some news and it’s actually pretty amazing news.

"Today is a very special day, it’s quite an emotional day to be honest, because I've spoken to the doctors and they’ve said as long as I take it easy, which isn't that easy for me, I'm OK to start work.

"So I am back today filming 'Homes Under The Hammer'.

"I'm in the valleys of Wales, I never thought I’d be so happy to see a two-up two-down terrace."

Martin then kissed the bricks of the Welsh house in celebration at his return to the show, and revealed he was wearing a loud shirt to mark his return.
