June Brown is "disappointed" that her life and particularly career hasn't gone the way she intended.

The 86-year-old star - who plays Dot Branning on 'EastEnders' - admits she would have much preferred to have a successful career as a theatre actress rather than on the small screen because she is such a huge fan of the arts.

She said: "I shouldn't say I'm disappointed, but I am disappointed that it didn't go the way I expected it to go. Which was in the classical theatre.

"You know, playing Chekhov, Ibsen, Shakespeare and Marlowe. Not that I think much of Marlowe. It's got some wonderful things in it, Christopher Marlowe, but he could have never written Shakespeare."

But growing older has not hampered June's ambitions, as the soap star is still confident of landing the lead role in a play one day.

She added to Radio Times magazine: "I'd like to be in a stage play again, only not with a minute part. I'd like to have the leading part in a play.

"As long as I have the strength to do it."
