Frank Skinner won't be present at his son's second birthday as he'll be filming Doctor Who.

The comedian, who is a lifelong fan of the BBC sci-fi drama, has landed a cameo appearance in the upcoming eighth series of the show - but fulfilling his dream of appearing in 'Doctor Who' has come at a personal cost.

Speaking on his Absolute Radio show, he said: "I thought about being in 'Doctor Who' about every four-and-a-half minutes years before this happened! However, I'm afraid I've gone deep into 'bad dad' territory, because in order to be in 'Doctor Who', one of the filming days is [son] Buzz's birthday. So I'm having to miss it.

Frank went on to quip that he will pick a new date to celebrate his son's birthday.

He joked: "I'm hoping it will be OK. The plan is to just make another birthday. We could just pick any date we like!"

The 57-year-old star - who also admits he missed his son's first steps because he attended a screening of 'Doctor Who' episode 'Remembrance of the Daleks' - was overjoyed when he was asked to make an appearance in the new series, which marks Peter Capaldi's first as the Time Lord.

He explained: "I was in Nando's when I got the phone call to say that I had got the part. I went outside and there were loads of people around, it was a sunny day ... I'm on the phone and he was telling me that I got the 'Doctor Who' job and I did a football volley mime, a really big one."
