Britain's Queen Elizabeth has invited Duchess Catherine to stay with her at Balmoral after she gives birth.

The British monarch has extended an invitation to her grandson Prince William and his wife to enjoy a week-long 'babymoon' at her Scottish estate in early August - just weeks after Catherine gives birth to the couple's first child.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "The queen's very excited about Kate and Will's new addition to the family. She sent them a formal invitation asking them to come to Balmoral and is hoping they will be there for the whole week.

"Her Majesty has hundreds of happy memories from Balmoral dating back to her childhood. She will love spending quality time with William and Kate and their baby away from prying eyes."

It's thought the 87-year-old monarch is eager to spend as much time with her great-grandchild as possible after missing out on her own children and grandchildren's childhoods due to her royal duties.

The source added: "The queen will want to spend as much time as possible with her third great-grandchild, who will one day be monarch regardless of sex.

"Her Majesty will relax in the clear Scottish air, enjoy long walks with her dogs, and dote on the new arrival like any loving great-grandparent."
