Leonard Dillon

Leonard Dillon has died at the age of 68.

The frontman for The Ethiopians lost his battle with cancer at his daughter Patrice's home in Jamaica on Wednesday.

The reggae and ska pioneer began his recording career in the early 1960s as Jack Sparrow - the name Johnny Depp later adopted in the Pirates of the Carribean movies. His early tracks featured Bob Marley as a backing singer.

He enjoyed international succcess in 1966 when The Ethiopians' Train to Skaville became a mainstream hit. The group followed that with big singles The Whip and Everything Crash.

The father of seven was diagnosed with cancer last year and underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour earlier this year.
