Flower Fellow is a young talent at just 17 years of age, but she's a child who has the seventies era of music close to her heart. Expressing her bliss through a plethora of flowers, she's hoping to convey her incredible talent with latest single 'Madman'.
Female First got the opportunity to put some questions to Flower Fellow, AKA Colette Olive, all about her music, the industry and much more.
For those who may be new to your music, how best would you describe your sound?
I'd say my music is dense, full of thick vocal textures and drums. I'm also really big on orchestral sounds like strings and organs.
What challenges have you faced in the music industry so far?
The industry isn't particularly accepting of people who are 'different'. Even though there's a growing indie scene, theres still a lot of pressure to be mainstream.
How difficult would you say this career path is in terms of making a name for yourself?
Man it's so hard! Especially as so much of music marketing happens on social media these days and I'm hopeless at that stuff. I'm a chick who still reads books as opposed to ebooks and listens to CDs and vinyl over mp3s.
How important is it for you to have creative control over the work you produce?
I'm so precious about my songs. When you write something personal it ends up meaning a lot to you so I get really protective of them. I'm a nightmare in the studio because I take a 'my way or the highway' approach. I love all the producers I've worked with but I can't help it; my songs are my children.
Where do you draw influence and inspiration from for your work?
Mostly literature and poetry. I read a lot of Emily Dickinson and Virginia Woolf and they taught me each word is precious and you can load it with meaning. In terms of my music in general, I'd say Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin are big icons for me. Strong women with strong voices!
If you could collaborate with anybody going forward, who would you choose and why?
Well if anyone invents a time machine I'd like to collaborate with Jim Morrison because he would be so rad to hang out with and so energetic on stage.
Tell us a random, funny fact about you that not many people know.
I regularly eat raw vegetables out of the packet for lunch. I don't care what people say. Spinach is rad.
Do you have definitive aims or goals for your career?
I would love to play Glasto someday. Its cliché but to be on a stage that Patti Smith, The Stones and Florence and the Machine have played would be insane.
Where do you hope to be this time next year?
In a bookshop. But with hopefully enough money to buy more than one at a time.
What should we expect from you in the coming weeks and months?
New music. I'm releasing my single Madman and recording new stuff for an album.
Flower Fellow's brand new single 'Madman' is officially released on September 4 via Circus City Records.
