From Up On Poppy Hill

From Up On Poppy Hill

Studio Ghibli have created some of the most wonderful animation movies over the years to become a real giant in this genre of film.

This week we celebrate the twenty fifth anniversary of two of their best movies as Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbour Totoro are re-released.

To celebrate the return of these two movies to the big screen we take a look at some of the other projects that are on the horizon for Studio Ghibli.

- From Up on Poppy Hill is the next movie to be released by Studio Ghibli - and it will be hitting the big screen later this summer.

The movie will see Goro Miyazaki return to the director's chair for the first time since Tales From Earthsea as he follows his father Hayao Miyazaki into the world of animation movies.

But Hayao Miyazaki has had a hand in this film as he has teamed up with Keiko Niwa to pen the screenplay to adapt the 1980 Japanese comic of the same name.

The movie has already enjoyed huge success in Japan and now we are going to be treated to another animation gem.

Studio Ghibli have stayed true to the hand drawn animation technique and their movies are a breath of fresh air in a genre that is packed with CGI.

Gillian Anderson, Sarah Bolger, Beau Bridges, Jamie Lee Curtis and Christina Hendricks have all lent their voices to the film.

From Up on Poppy Hill will be hitting the big screen on 2nd August.

- And Hayao Miyazaki fans will be happy to know that the animation master will be back in the director's chair for his new film The Wind Has Risen.

It will be the first movie that Miyazaki has directed since Ponyo back in 2008 and so it is fantastic to see him back doing what he does best.

Miyazaki has penned the screenplay and the film is based on the novel by Tatsuo Hori.

The movie will follow the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II.

The Wind Has Risen will be released in Japan this summer and Western audiences will have to be patient as it could be some time before it is ready for a release here.

- The Tale of Princess Kaguya is another movie that Studio Ghibli have ready to release in Japan as Isao Takahata is in the director's chair.

Takahata has brought us classics such as Grave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday over this years and this is his first Studio Ghibli movie sinceMy Neighbour the Yamadas.

Takahata has teamed up with Riko Sakaguchi to pen the screenplay, which is based on the folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.

- And Studio Ghibli are set to move into live action for the first time as Kiki's Delivery Service is to be remade with The Grudge director Takashi Shimizu at the helm.

Studio Ghibli have delivered movies such as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle over the years and their long standing tradition of fine animation looks set to continue.

The Grave of the Fireflies & My Neighbour Totoro will be released 24th May.
