Tracks

Mia Wasikowska is one of the most exciting young actresses working in Hollywood at the moment. She returns to the big screen this week to play Robyn Davidson in Tracks.

Tracks is based on Davidson's memoir of trekking 1,700 miles through the Australian desert with four camels and her trusty dog.

To celebrate the release of the movie, we take a look back at Wasikowska's eclectic back catalogue.

- That Evening Sun (2010)

That Evening Sun was based on the short story I Hate to See That Evening Sun Go Down by William Gay, and saw Wasikowska team up with director Scott Teems.

With Hal Holbrook in the central role, the movie follows a farmer as he returns home to Tennessee to confront a family betrayal and the loss of his farm.

While the movie does contain a tour de force central performance from Halbrook, the movie packed with interesting and well-developed characters.

Wasikowska takes on the role of teenager Pamela, who befriends Hal Holbrook's cantankerous Abner - together they have a fantastic chemistry, and it is great to see them share the screen together.

That Evening Star was released before the huge success of Alice In Wonderland, and showed Wasikowska as a really promising talent.

- The Kids Are All Right (2010)

Towards the end of 2010, Wasikowska joined forces with Annette Bening and Julianne Moore with another supporting performance in The Kids Are All Right.

The movie was the second feature film for Lisa Cholodenko, and followed a gay couple as the father of their two children - conceived by artificial insemination - comes into their lives.

The Kids Are All Right was one of my favourite films of 2010, and was a movie that looked at the disjointed modern family, and was packed with family values.

Bening, Moore, Wasikowska, and Josh Hutcherson are all perfectly cast as the family who have their lives turned upside down by the appearance of Mark Ruffalo.

The Kids Are All Right is a very intelligent as well as very funny look at adult relationships and the stresses and strains that come hand and hand with them.

- Jane Eyre (2011)

Jane Eyre has been told many times on the big and small screen, and yet Cary Fukunaga's version is one of the best adaptations of the much-loved Charlotte Bronte novel.

At the time, Wasikowska was still a relative newcomer on the global film stage, and yet her Jane Eyre has such elegance and poise - it really was a terrific performance from her in the central role.

Michael Fassbender takes on the role of Rochester, and together the pair sizzles. There is a real spark of chemistry between them, which makes this fascinating literary relationship really work.

Jane Eyre may be a well told tale, but Fukunaga, Wasikowska and Fassbender make this story seem new and full of life. It really was a terrific interpretation of a great book.

- Only Lovers Left Alive (2014)

Only Lovers Left Alive was released back in February, and remains one of my favourite films of 2014 so far.

This was another supporting role for Wasikowska - as she teamed up with director and writer Jim Jarmusch for the first time - but she took on a character that left devastation in her wake.

Only Lovers Left Alive follows vampires Adam and Eve - their romance has spanned several centuries. But their reunion is disrupted by Eve's uncontrollable younger sister.

This is just one of the most beautiful films that I have seen this year: this is not like other vampire movies that we have seen in recent years.

Wasikowska, Tilda Swinton, and Tom Hiddleston all give unforgettable performances - this is a movie that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.

- The Double (2014)

2014 has already been a busy year for Wasikowska, as she also teamed up with Jesse Eisenberg for The Double.

The Double is the second directorial effort from Richard Ayoade, and has been lighting up the festival circuit.

The movie followed Simon (Eisenberg) whose life if turned upside down when his doppelganger appears.

The Double is a stylised and smart film, which sees Ayoade on top form: he really is turning into a very exciting filmmaker.

His casting is spot on, as Eisenberg and Wasikowska really do make a great movie team. This is an interesting movie project for both stars and they really do shine.

Other great performances from Wasikowska include Alice In Wonderland, Lawless, and Stoker.

Tracks is released 25th April.
