Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire

Danny Boyle is back in the director's chair this week with Trance - his first movie in two years.

Granted he did have the small job of the opening ceremony at the London 2012 Games but now he is back where he belongs.

To celebrate that return we are looking at the best Danny Boyle movies of his career to far... and where better to start that with his greatest success Slumdog Millionaire.

Slumdog Millionaire hit the big screen at the beginning of 2009 and it was one of the biggest hits of the year - both critically and commercially.

The movie was a big screen adaptation of Vikas Swarup's novel Q&A and it was adapted beautifully by Simon Beaufoy.

Slumdog Millionaire is a triumph from start to finish as it is a movie that is so colourful and upbeat that you cannot help but get swept along with the story.

The movie follows Jamal, a Mumbai teen who grew up in the slums who ends up being a contestant on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

His knowledge leads to suspicion and he is arrested and accused of cheating. But through the interrogation we learn about his life story and how he knows the answer to the questions.

Boyle isn't afraid to dig into India's underbelly highlighting exploitation, corruption and the difficulties to survive and he contrasts this beautifully with the colours and the life that bursts out of the slums.

And while Boyle has produced a movie that celebrates life and hope wrapped up in this game show it very much is a movie of survival and how Jamal hopes to try and leave all of that behind him.

It is a wonderful performance from Dev Patel - this was a movie that really did put him on the map - as he is the everyman character that you cannot help but root for and get behind.

Equally Freida Pinto is also terrific and there is a real chemistry between her and Patel and this makes the central relationship work so beautifully.

Slumdog Millionaire is a captivating story from start to finish as Boyle delivered a fast-paced and visually beautiful movie.

Slumdog Millionaire went on to be the toast of Hollywood as it picked up ten Oscar nominations and went on to win eight; including Best Picture and Best Director for Danny Boyle.

Trance is released 27th March.
