Michael Pena is to star in new sci-fi film 'Extinction'.

According to Deadline, the 41-year-old actor has joined the cast of the movie which is being directed by Ben Young - who previously worked on 'Hounds of Love' - with the script being penned by Spenser Cohen, Brad Caleb Kane and 'Arrival' writer Eric Heisserer.

The plot focuses on a man who has a recurring dream of losing his family, but his nightmare begins to become a reality when an extra-terrestrial force invades Earth and is intent on destroying the planet and he must find a way to save his loved-ones.

Good Universe's Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake are producing with Mandeville Films' Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman and Alexander Young acting as executive producer.

Pena was last seen in 'Collateral Beauty' and was part of box office successes 'The Martian' and 'Ant-Man'.

He can next be seen in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming action-comedy 'CHiPs', which is based on the 1970s TV series of the same name.

He has just finished recording voice parts for animated films 'The Lego Ninjago Movie' and 'My Little Pony: The Movie' and is currently shooting 'Murder on the Orient Express'. He is also part of the star-studded cast for Ava DuVernay's 'A Wrinkle in Time'.
