Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren is calling for more films for older audiences as she believes they are a lost audience.

In the last twelve months we have seen the likes of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Quartet - both of follow people later in life - hit the big screen and they really have hit a chord with audiences.

And Mirren believes that this is an audience that has been forgotten about over the years and the studios are just beginning to realise the potential.

Speaking to the Press Association the actress said: "I think it's just a question of suddenly finding an audience that they'd forgotten about," Dame Helen said.

"And they didn't think anyone over the age of 50, let's say, wanted to go to the cinema. But they didn't want to go to the cinema because there were no movies they wanted to see!

"They've (the studios) suddenly found if they can make the right kind of movie for that audience, then absolutely they want to go and see them."

"The kids are gone, they're not babysitting any more and they've got money in their pocket, they want to go out and they want to go to the movies."

Mirren can currently be seen on the big screen in Hitchcock - which follows the relationship of the director and his wife during the making of Psycho.

Later this year she will be back kicking some ass in action movie Red 2 with Bruce Willis.
