The following roles were important in John’s acting career because they all show a different side of him and highlight his flexibility as an actor.
From Paris with Love (2010) - Charlie Wax
Travolta plays the trigger happy, loose cannon, C.I.A agent Charlie Wax who is sent to Paris to help stop a terrorist attack. He partners the low level agent James Reece (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Wax leads James on a shooting spree through the Parisian underworld.
Hairspray (2008) - Edna Turnblad
Travolta goes drag as Edna Turnblad the mother of the lead role. She is a big, brunette and Beautiful woman as told by one of the films songs and this is the second of two blockbuster musicals John Travolta has been in.
Pulp Fiction (1994) - Vincent Vega
In this Oscar-winning Quentin Tarantino film, Travolta stars opposite Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis as Vincent Vega, a hitman working for his mob boss.
Travolta’s character is the only one to appear in all story lines of the movie aside from Ving Rhames’s and Samuel L. Jackson’s characters.
Travolta was also nominated for his second Academy Award for his stunning iconic performance as Vincent Vega.
Swordfish (2001) - Gabriel Shear
In this cool and calculating crime thriller, Travolta plays Gabriel Shear who enlists the help of a computer hacker known as Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman).
He is an underworld boss and uses Stanley to hack into a bank and take $9.5 billion. With Travolta’s long hair, goatee and sharp suits he manages to stay oddly charming.
Grease (1978)
In this musical legend, Travolta plays Danny Zuko, who is known for being a heartthrob, and a heartbreaker.
This 1950’s based musical about Danny’s teenage love with Sandy, (Olivia Newton-John) won the hearts of people worldwide.
Travolta will be forever associated with this role as a pinnacle moment in contemporary film history.
Thin Red Line (1998) - Brig. Gen. Quintard
As the hard-nosed but fair General, Travolta gives a great performance in this World War II film about the Battle of Guadalcanal, with the film earning seven Oscar nominations including one for Best Picture.
Saturday Night Fever (1977)
In this worldwide successful film, Travolta garnered his first Oscar nominations for his role as Tony Manero, and uneducated Brooklyn teenager who was known for showing off his moves at the local disco.
Not only did this film become an instant classic; it also sparked an even larger fan base for the 1970’s popularity of disco dancing.
Face/Off (1997) - Sean Archer/Caster Troy
In the action-packed film Travolta and Nicholas Cage each play two personalities: an FBI agent and a terrorist sworn enemies who assume the physical appearance of one another, by literally grafting the other’s face onto their own. This film was a critical and financial success.
Broken Arrow (1996) - Major Vic Deakins
In Utah’s canyon country, US Air Force pilot Major Vic Deakins (Travolta) is out on a mission with two stolen nuclear devices, and has his co-pilot hot on his trail. This intense thriller shows Travolta’s 'bad guy' acting expertise.
Get Shorty (1995) - Chili Palmer
In this classic comedy from 1995, Travolta plays Chili Palmer, a Brooklyn-born mobster who moves from Miami to Hollywood to collect a gambling debt.
But he ends up realizing that the mob is tough, but it’s nothing like the movie business.
Travolta won a golden globe for his comedic performance in the film.
