The Aviator

The Aviator

Martin Scorsese has made some great movies and worked with some of Hollywood’s greatest actors during his long and very successful career.

This week he is back in the director’s chair for Hugo, his first feature film since Shutter Island, which stars Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz and Jude Law.

But it seems that once actors have worked with Scorsese they are desperate to work with him again - take a look at the stars who have worked with the Oscar winner on more than one occasion.

Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro, of course, is the most famous of collaborators with Scorsese as they worked together on eight movies since 1973.

They kicked off their partnership with Mean Street before going onto Taxi Drive and New York, New York.

Raging Bull is widely regarded as they best of the movies that they made together - De Niro went on to pick up a Best Actor Oscar for his riveting central performance.

But it was 1995 when we last saw them work together on Casino.

Leonardo DiCaprio

But the noughties brought Scorsese another high profile partnership as he teamed up with Leonardo DiCaprio.

2002 saw them team up for the first time in Gangs of New York as DiCaprio moved away from being a pin-up to a serious Hollywood heavyweight.

Two years later they teamed up again for The Aviator as they brought the story of Howard Hughes to the big screen. DiCaprio was Oscar nominated as was the movie and Scorsese.

But it was The Departed in 2006 that has, so far, been their most successful collaboration, as an all star cast came together for a remake of Infernal Affairs.

The Departed was a box office hit and went on to pick up the Bes Picture Oscar and Scorsese finally got his hands on the Best Director gong.

Ray Winstone

The Brit actor teamed up with Scorsese for the first time back in 2006 when he took on the role of Mr French in The Departed.

Winstone was joined on the cast list with DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg as the movie was both a critical and commercial hit.

This week sees Winstone reunite with Scorsese for their second project Hugo, which sees the Brit actor take on the role of Uncle Claude in the heart-warming movie.

Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.

Ben Kingsley

Hugo also marks the second project for Oscar winner Ben Kingsley with the director as he stars as Georges Melies in the movie.

Hugo has already found success at the U.S. box office, opening at number five over the weekend - and that success looks set to continue here in the UK.

Kingsley teamed up with Scorsese for the first time last year when he starred with Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo in Shutter Island.

The movie was one of the best thrillers of 2010 and had one of the greatest movie twists of the year.

Daniel Day Lewis

Multi-Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis is another actor who has teamed up with Scorsese twice during his career.

The first collaboration came in 1993 in The Age of Innocence, a big screen adaptation of the 1920 novel by Edith Wharton.

Tale of 19th century New York high society in which a young lawyer falls in love with a woman separated from her husband, while he is engaged to the woman's cousin.

They reunited almost ten years later when he took on the role of Bill ‘The Butcher’ Cutting in Gangs of New York, a role which would earn him an Oscar nomination for Best actor.

Harvey Keitel

Harvey Keitel first teamed up with Martin Scorsese back in 1973 when he took on the role of Charlie in Mean Streets, which also was the first movie for Scorsese & Robert De Niro.

Mean Street was an early career performance for Keitel and it really put him on the acting map and helped kick off his career.

Just three years later Keitel teamed up with the pair once again when he starred as ‘Sport’ Matthew in the critically acclaimed Taxi Driver.

It would be over a decade, in 1988, when they would team up for a third time in The Last Temptation of Christ once of Scorsese’s most controversial projects.

Joe Pesci

Finally Joe Pesci is another actor who has worked for Scorsese on multiple occasions having starred in three Scorsese movies.

In fact two of his performances in Scorsese remain his most famous roles. He kicked off the collaboration in 1980 when he took on the role of Joey LaMotta.

He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, losing out to Timothy Hutton for his performance in Ordinary People.

In 1990 he finally got his hands on the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas.

He would work with Scorsese one more time in 1995 when he once again starred alongside De Niro in Casino.

Hugo is released 2nd December
