A fallen Roman general, forced into slavery, Maximum’s quest for revenge reinvigorated the ‘swords and sandals’ epic.
Stunningly played by Russell Crowe, who bagged an Oscar for his performance, Maximus is one of cinemas epic leads and defiantly entertained us in and out of the arena.
Dressed in his distinctive black leather armour, he brought both strength and soul to the amphitheatres of Rome, at one moment fighting a tiger, the next recalling his love for his dead family.
Whether it was bringing an audience for tears or making them cheer for blood, Maximus dominated the screen and easily fought his way into our hearts.
