The Disney songs we love never truly leave us. It’s nearly impossible to hear the words 'circle' and 'life' without feeling an unyielding desire to sing along with wild animals in the middle of the Sahara desert.
Disney songs have a way of taking us back to our days of childhood and VHS tapes and can turn any and every location into a concert hall. Obviously that’s what I’m doing right now as I Youtube the songs I memorized over 10 years ago. Here is a list of the best of the best Disney songs that will never get old.
- 'Circle of Life'- The Lion King
Ah, the Circle of Life. This song is the central theme of the film and any song Sir. Elton John touches automatically turns to gold, and this Grammy and Oscar nominated gem.
It’s hard to pick just one song from the Lion King suitable for the title of best, and the entire movie can be categorized as a sing-a-long! Circle of Life is uplifting, exciting and connects all of the characters in the film.
It teaches young Simba about the world he will one day lead, and the connection each and every animal play to one another.
- 'A Whole New World' - Aladdin
Something about forbidden love and blazing through the midnight sky on a magic carpet really tugs at my heartstrings. 'I can show you the world, shining, shimmering, splendid.' It’s hard not to believe in love when singing along with Aladdin and Jasmine as they escape their harsh reality and simply enjoy the company of one another.
The young couple is finally safe from the limitations placed on their love and safe from the dangers of Jafar and Yago when they’re flying in the 'endless diamond sky.' This song won 3 Grammys and an Oscar as well as receiving numerous other awards and nominations.
- 'Under the Sea' - The Little Mermaid
Sebastion’s lyrical attempt to convince Ariel 'life is better down where it’s wetter' may have failed, but the song was a huge hit!
Under the Sea won a Grammy for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture and an Oscar for Best Music Original Song. It’s a feel good hit that makes one think life in the ocean can’t be all that bad.
- 'Hercules' - I can go the Distance
Hercules had a rough life. Kidnapped from his biological parents, ruled as an outcast by the people of his community and held to terribly high expectations due to his supernatural strength, this guy never caught an easy break.
Instead of caving to frustration and admitting defeat, Hercules looked within and learned to believe in himself. 'I Can Go the Distance' was a turning point for young Hercules and remains an inspiration to us all.
This upbeat tune following a moment of sadness is catchy, positive and central to the film, making it one of the best Disney songs.
- 'Beauty and the Beast' - Beauty and the Beast
This 2 time Oscar-winning gem featuring the vocals of Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson has become as timeless as the film it represents.
The bond between Beast and Belle is unbreakable, and this song represents the moment Beast decides he wants to tell Belle he is in love with her. Beast dresses his best to impress his lady and Belle looks absolutely stunning in her signature yellow ball gown for their date, with Mrs. Pott’s providing the music with her rendition of the tune.
Beast and Belle forget the world when the dance together and the presence of one another becomes the only thing that matters.
Beauty & The Beast 3D is in theatres 4 May 2012!
