Plus size British shoppers are feeling betrayed and ignored by most high street fashion retailers, according to new research.
According to a new survey, 90% of women over the size of 14 feel abandoned by the UK high street and two-thirds of those surveyed feel the range of clothing and sizes available on the high street is disappointing.
Plus size shoppers feel store staff do not understand them and cannot relate to their needs with only 1 in 10 plus size women feeling comfortable asking for help from in-store assistants.
Many of these women have no abandoned shopping on the high street – preferring to pick up basics online or in supermarkets.
Astonishingly only 7% of plus size women say they buy clothes with fashion or trend in mind – instead having to buy clothes to ‘hide’ the parts of their bodies they hate.
The research reveals that the biggest bug-bear of women shoppers sized 14-plus is having a door or curtain in the store changing room that provides enough privacy, closely followed by not having helpful attendees on hand to give them good advice or alternative sizes.
Alla Buinowicz, managing director of Taking Shape, commented: “I am staggered by this research. Millions of women in the UK have been left in the cold by the major high street chains, and, unsurprisingly, they have abandoned shopping on the high street. These curvy British women feel unwanted and they are certainly unrepresented.
“So many British women have frankly given up on fashion. I want these ladies to come into one of my Taking Shape stores and rediscover their fashion mojo. All women should feel comfortable shopping for new clothes in store without dreading the experience. Takin Shape is bring back the feel-good factor to shopping and reviving the shopping experience for British plus-size ladies – we hope these finding encourage other brands to do the same.”
Taking Shape recently arrived in the UK aiming to tackle these issues by creating a brand new shopping experience for plus size women. Taking Shape offers UK women clothing in sizes 14 to 26 that is fashionable and flatters. Their stores are fun and relaxed with friendly in-store assistants who can relate to the customers and who enjoy offering free styling sessions for every customer.
