The 69-year-old singer is keen to spend more time with his family - husband David and their sons Zachary and Elijah - and focus his attention on his charity, the Elton John Aids Foundation.

A source told the Daily Mail: "Elton has seen and done it all, and has nothing left to prove."

Elton originally planned to retire from music in 2018 but has reportedly decided to bring the date forward.

The star previously admitted he was ready to stop touring because he wants to spend more time at home with his family.

He said: "I mean I do want to stop 'shclepping', I do. That's the hardest thing when you're touring - I was in the Far East before Christmas and Australia, [and] I had a ball, but I was away from my boys and it's hard.

"I'm going to stop travelling as much ... because you know it is about them and if you don't stop then what's the point in having children?"

And Elton has insisted that, despite his many years of stardom, his children remain grounded as they acknowledge his fame but ignore it.

He said: "We are a very privileged couple, we live an incredibly privileged life and so it's hard to keep their feet on the ground, but so far so good.

"They know what daddy does they know he's a singer but they are not that interested, they are more interested with their torches and their Lego."
