I'm a late developer… I always meant to be a writer but have only just got around to it. Life got in the way! I served my writing apprenticeship as a journalist instead. Having said that, I think I'm a better writer for waiting till I had more to say.
I'm an obsessive reader. I hoover up books … which is possibly the best training for a novelist, ever.
I try and run every day, whatever the weather. I feel so much better for it when I do. I don't have time for many miles during the week, but even a short burst before work gives me a lift. I do a lot of my writing while pounding the pavements.
I come from a large and noisy family. Maybe that's why I need silence in my life. I'm hugely grateful for the love and support of my Mum and Dad who were wonderful parents to us.
I have a wonderful husband and two grown-up children. They bring me huge joy and I love spending time with them.
We lived in Australia for a year when our children were small which was a great adventure for us all. We have very precious memories from that time.
My husband and I enjoy singing in a small choir. He's a talented musician but I (just about) hang on to his coat-tails. He's very patient about teaching me the notes.
I studied Latin and Ancient Greek and then Social Anthropology which gave me a passion for storytelling and also for observing human behaviour. Both are useful qualities for a writer.
My favourite kind of holiday involves visiting France, walking or cycling, or ideally a combination of all three.
Every day is improved by dark chocolate. Or a glass of wine. Possibly served separately.
