TV nutritionist Gillian McKeith and ex MP Lembit Opik were voted by the public to compete in the next Bush Tucker Trial called The Crate Escape to win food for their respective camps.
Having been told by Ant and Dec that she would be undertaking the Trial on behalf of Camp Sheila, Gillian immediately started to panic. “If I’m stuck in a crate with some kind of thing I’m probably going to pass out. We all know I’m afraid of everything that is in this jungle.” Later she added “I’d like a challenge that I’m good at like a lecture on Wellness”.
But even as Gillian waited, she flinched and panicked as a mosquito landed on her. And on her way to the Trial, she panicked on one of the famous jungle walkways as she claimed that she couldn’t go any further because there was a spider blocking her path. She only continued after a ranger removed the offending cobweb.
Britt said “Gillian screams like a baby when she sees a fly and I think if you can stop her from doing that. If you introduce a little bit of bug to her every day. She’s definitely more secure than when she first went in.”
Meanwhile in Camp Bruce, Lembit was also getting nervous about the impending Trial and Linford gave him a pep talk to encourage him. “I feel a real nervousness about this now and I feel a responsibility to the team to do well. I’ll try and bring the stars back. I’ll just do my best.”
THE CHALLENGE
Lembit and Gillian arrived at the Trials area and were greeted by Ant and Dec. “I’m terrified” warned Gillian and explained that she thought she had been picked for the Trial because her “blood curdling screams will be heard for miles.”
Ant and Dec explained that there were two crates which led to separate underground tunnels which would be the celebrities’ only way of escape. They would be chained and padlocked into the crates and they would have to unlock a series of five padlocks to escape. The Trial was a straightforward race with the winner being the first to emerge from the tunnel and claim food for their camp. Being a Bush Tucker Trial, the celebrities would be joined by various jungle critters including spiders, rats and cockroaches.
Gillian looked worried and said “I’m going to pass out. What am I doing here. I’ll definitely try but I am petrified.” They both lay in their respective crates, were padlocked in and the lids closed.
In pitch darkness Gillian and Lembit both struggled to release their locks. They were joined by rats and Lembit soon freed himself from his shackles, clambering through his escape tunnel, emerging to ground level and ringing his bell signifying his completing the Trial.
However, Gillian started to scream and panicked after water started dripping into her crate. Medic Bob came and assisted her as she was released from her chains. She climbed out of the crate and fainted. Gillian was given oxygen by Medic Bob and she came round.
“I wasn’t expecting anything in there” she explained. “I thought there was going to be tonnes of water on my face, I couldn’t see the lock. I could feel myself passing out. I tried. I desperately tried. I have massive phobias that I’m facing. Its not like I’m not trying. I’ve come here I’ve got in a helicopter and I had a friend who died in a helicopter crash so that was a huge deal for me. I slept out in the jungle overnight and I’m terrified of insects and today I had to cross a bridge and I’m afraid of heights.”
Meanwhile Lembit confessed “I’m devastated. I feel for Gillian but I have to say I do feel so relieved.”
