‘Emmerdale’ stars don't have to take part in “triggering” storylines.
The ITV soap's bosses “pre-warn” the cast when they are looking to delve into “serious” plot points and give them opportunity to remove themselves from the scenes.
Producer Laura Shaw told the Daily Star newspaper's Hot TV column: “With any serious or triggering subject matter, we pre-warn anyone on it what we’re doing, and why, and to talk to us if there’s anything worrying them."
Due to the nature of some storylines, the team acknowledges that things can be “uncomfortable at times” for some actors.
Laura added: “The subject matter can be uncomfortable at times. We have to make sure everyone is absolutely okay with that and anyone isn’t doesn’t need to work on it.”
One of the most recent sensitive storylines is Paddy Kirk battle with clinical depression an the actor behind the character Dominic Brunt admitted to feeling “supported” with the “huge” obligation to do the condition suffered by millions justice.
The 52-year-old soap star told the outlet: “I felt a huge sense of responsibility on my shoulders to try and get it right.
“I felt supported. I’ve got an hour’s drive home, get the radio back on and make sure I got some sleep that night.”
Dominic recently remarked on “the mechanics” of showing Paddy’s deteriorating mental health and how important he found doing it justice.
He said: “The mechanics of how it was going to work and who was being involved and the scale of it, and it kind of transcends the normal storylines that were normally given.
“I think the only time I've had something like this before was when when Aaron came out, and it mattered to people.
“I remember an uncle that was kind of that you know that generational kind of bigotry that's there and he watched it and went yeah, I understand that.
“I was hoping that this story might do that that it might actually make a difference and normalize talking.”
